General surprises many Cambodians by holding wedding for pythons

PHNOM PENH , March 5 KYODO -- The decision by a Cambodian general to have two pythons that live under his villa ''joined in marriage'' has surprised Cambodians, a local newspaper reported Wednesday. Rasmei Kampuchea said Gen. Neang Phat held a wedding ceremony -- replete with Buddhist monks, traditional music and a reception for some dozens celebrants -- for the pair on Tuesday at his new villa about 25 kilometers east of Phnom Penh. The paper quoted the four-star general as saying the pythons, a male that arrived at the villa Friday and a female who arrived the next day, had made their home at his home since January. He decided to give them a proper wedding ceremony after he dreamed of powerful spirits telling him to take good care of the pythons as they would help guard his family and the whole village. The male python has been Prosperous Friday and the female Lucky Saturday to mark the days they arrived at his villa.
